06 Jul Laura’s First Month at DISH Hospitality
Recruitment Consultant Laura has been with us for a whole month! We caught up with her to find out how her first month has been:
- How have you found your first month at DISH Hospitality?
Really good! It’s been fun! Busy but good. Building relationships with clients and candidates has been nice.
Generally, I prefer working with clients as candidates can walk away from jobs, and rightly so, but things can be quite unpredictable. That being said, I do like that I feel as though I’m making a difference in candidates’ lives. It’s nice when you build a relationship with a candidate so that they feel as though they can rely on you.
2. What was the highlight of your month?
That’s a really hard question to answer, which is good! Just being able to work with Katie and Eddy again is a highlight. It’s just so familiar since I used to work with them when DISH was the restaurant.
I’m able to work from home and I really enjoy the flexibility. We touch base every day and we do what we need to to get the work done.
3. What was your biggest challenge?
The biggest difficulty is when a candidate is very particular and it can be a challenge to meet their requirements. You just have to clearly state the boundaries of what you can provide and what you can’t.
4. What are you excited to develop/learn?
I’ve just been shown how to process payroll and timesheets so I’m excited to do this on my own when Katie and Eddy go away. Summer is usually the busiest time in hospitality so it’s quite daunting but I know that I can always reach out to Josh and Seon at YCG if I’m not sure about anything. I know I can do it, there’s no need to work myself up just because I’ll be doing it on my own.
5. Is it how you expected it to be, working at DISH?
It is, yes. It’s nice to get into the swing of hospitality again. I expected to do some refreshes on what goes on in the kitchen rather than front-of-house because my experience has always been in front-of-house. If I have any questions on back-of-house, I know I can call Eddy or Katie.
6. What advice would you give someone starting a new job?
Have an open mind and try to turn your hand to most things, especially at the beginning when it’s expected that you’ll be learning new things. No question is a stupid question. It’s better to ask than get something wrong that you then have to go back and fix later.
